This is a selection of drawings not included in a collection. Not all the drawings are dated or signed; often it was necessary to estimate a date based on style or subject matter.
There is not always a clear distinction between drawings and paintings. For purposes of this site, media such as ink, crayon, felt tip and pencil have been treated as drawings while watercolours, oils and acrylics have been treated as painting; but Carl freely mixed these media so that sometimes what should strictly be a painting looks more like a drawing. Categories should therefore be taken with liberal application of condiments.
Some drawings Carl saw fit to organize in bound collections and for these this site creates a third category on the grounds that Carl considered the selection he had made and the organization significant, meaning the artist’s own view on the matter should be respected.

Without a title it is difficult to decide the meaning of that column of light in the second picture, but that there was a symbolic intention is likely. The child is clearly female, so I won’t go as far as to speculate on a Madonna and Child theme, yet it seems to have spoken to Carl at a deep level. He framed the work himself and it has hung in the family home for many years.
