Some of the originals of works reproduced here are no longer in the Carl van den Bosch estate. They have been reproduced from photographs, many of which date back to the time the work was first painted, some even in black and white. In one or two instances the only photograph containing an image was taken at an angle, which necessitated the use of image-editing software to correct the distortion as much as possible. When no size is given, the work is certainly no longer in our possession.

about 1950; watercolour on paper; 31.5 cm x 20.5 cm (approx.)
The watercolour was for many years stored in an oversized art book, which undoubtedly preserved it, although the tearing at the edges is clearly visible. The black background is not part of the original.

about 1962; oil on canvas; original size unknown
Dundas Street was originally the main Ontario artery between Toronto (York) and Windsor. It is still found in numerous towns and cities, where it is invariably the main street, as it is in London.
This image was recovered from a family photograph; its top was cut off by the framing of the photo.

Semi-abstract, suggesting fishing nets, rocks, and a totem-like post that in turn suggests a cross; if that was the idea, it juxtaposes a West-Coast native fishing village with the Galilean fishermen who followed Jesus on his way to the Cross.

“Kite,” here, in the sense of the small bird of prey, done in West Coast aboriginal style., although there is a visual pun in this rendering, because the form could believably be version of the wind-borne flying device known as a kite. (Both the bird and the device hover in the wind.)
Carl himself identified this as an oil painting (it appears to have been exhibited somewhere), which means that some of the other pieces done in a similar style and with a similar signature, like the “Women with Large Jewelry,” may also be oil, rather than acrylics.
